Singing Members

The Richmond Women’s Chorus holds auditions throughout the year for singing members. At the beginning of each concert period, the Chorus accepts new singing members. Women are selected based on a vocal interview (see below). The interview focuses on ability to sing on pitch and to blend within the assigned section and the chorus as a whole. Members must be able to attend weekly rehearsals on Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm at Imperial Plaza in Richmond’s North Side. Members also give a yearly financial contribution.

Prospective members are always welcome to attend a rehearsal; iIt will provide a chance to meet some of the members, to see how rehearsals are run, and to get a feel for singing with the chorus before an audition. Members must be 18 years or older by the date of the first rehearsal in order to sing with the chorus.

Richmond Women's Chorus begins fall rehearsals on Tuesday, September 15, 2009.

Auditions for 2009-2010

Schedule an appointment with Tim Gillham:  804-241-0446 or info@richmondmenschorus.org. Location TBA (Tim will let you know when you set up an appointment.

You will be asked to have a “vocal placement interview.”  It’s VERY SIMPLE!!  You sing for only the director, not an “audition committee,” so you don’t feel like you have to impress a room full of people (although you can bring a friend in the room with you for moral support.)

Here’s exactly what will happen:

  1. You will sing a few scales to find the top and bottom of your range (so as to assign you to the most comfortable part in SSAA music and demonstrate ability to match pitch);
  2. You’ll hear a few groups of 3 notes and have you sing them back;
  3. There is a very short and easy music reading exercise you’ll be asked to sing. This is not a make or break issue, and you aren’t expected to do it perfectly. It simply helps demonstrate where you are on a music reading level.

THAT’S IT!  All of this takes less than 5 minutes and it’s totally painless (and usually fun), we promise!

For Non-Singing Members

The RWC “5th Section” assist with ushering, box office, backstage assistance and other non-singing duties.  (Friends, partners, and spouses of singers are especially welcome!)

Please contact Tim Gillham at info@richmondwomenschorus.org if you have questions.
